Seeing lightness in the dark.

From intense sunlight in bright snow down to a moonless night in a dark forest, we can use light to recognize objects and guide our actions. This remarkable range mainly rests on having two different types of photoreceptors, the rods and the cones. The cones are active under daylight conditions, allowing high acuity and color vision. Rods are mainly active under very dim illumination conditions...

Seeing, adapting to, and reproducing the appearance of nature.

The perception of color in nature is a complex multidimensional phenomenon. The vast range and high dimensionality of the light stimulus in a natural scene is reduced in range and dimension by the human visual system. The color experience is reduced to the appearance attributes of brightness, lightness, colorfulness, chroma, saturation, and hue from spectral energy distributions in the scene, w...

Effect of Chromatic Components on Facial Skin Whiteness

Although the color measurement of facial skin becomes more common in dermatology and cosmetics, little is known about the relationship between subjective color perception and colorimetric values in facial skin. In this study, the possible relationships among perceived whiteness and the metric lightness, chroma and hue angle of Japanese females’ facial skin color were investigated. First, the pe...

Color and material perception: achievements and challenges.

There is a large literature characterizing human perception of the lightness and color of matte surfaces arranged in coplanar arrays. In the past ten years researchers have begun to examine perception of lightness and color using wider ranges of stimuli intended to better approximate the conditions of everyday viewing. One emerging line of research concerns perception of lightness and color in ...

Maximum likelihood conjoint measurement of lightness and chroma.

Color varies along dimensions of lightness, hue, and chroma. We used maximum likelihood conjoint measurement to investigate how lightness and chroma influence color judgments. Observers judged lightness and chroma of stimuli that varied in both dimensions in a paired-comparison task. We modeled how changes in one dimension influenced judgment of the other. An additive model best fit the data in...
